Based upon the solid foundations of granddad Artemis’s winemaking tradition since 1952, the winery made a dynamic entry in contemporary winemaking in 2004, when grandson Artemis Karamolegos invested in the production facility and the privately owned vineyards, producing wine of protected designation of origin (PDO) for the first time. Almost 15 years later, our wines keep earning prizes at international and domestic competitions while our export activities continue to grow on a yearly basis: we are currently the third largest winery of Santorini in terms of production volume.

Athanasiou winery is located in the heart of the largest PDO vineyard of Greece, the historical Nemea. Ktima Biblia Chora is the brainchild of two talented winemakers, Vangelis Gerovassiliou and Vassilis Tsaktsarlis. In unison, both men earmarked a promising site for a new vineyard in 1998 and went on to create today’s established Greek wine estate. It is here, on the slopes of the Pangeon Mountain range in Kokkinochori, Kavala that they shaped Ktima Biblia Chora, a state-of-the-art winery encircled by its own privately owned, organic vineyard which now stretches over 65 ha.

Gavalas family winery, one of the oldest wineries in Santorini, lies in the traditional village of Megalochori. The purpose of our family is to highlight the particular characteristics of Santorini’s “terroir”. The fourth generation winemaker is George Gavalas and the fifth is his son, Vagelis. With proper respect to the local varieties, we are focused on limited production bottlings. Gavalas winery vinifies the most vibrant variety in Greece, Assyrtiko, as well as Aidani, Mandilaria and Mavrotragano. In order to show the richness of the land, we are the only winery in Santorini that vinifies the indigenous rare varieties of Katsano and Voudomato.

The history of their winery began almost a century ago in 1917 in Keratea, Eastern Attica, where their grandfather Antonis first started making wine using clay amphorae for fermentation. After Antonis, their father Dimitris continued the tradition, expanding the business and eventually passing it on to his three sons, Antonis, Tasos, and Stamatis, who grew up learning the art of winemaking. In 1995, Christos Poultsidis began his journey in agriculture, specializing in soil science and conducting soil analysis across Greece, which led him to explore Greek viticulture and various vine varieties. In 1998, armed with experience and data, he planted his first vineyard in Nees Karyes, Larissa, spanning 5 acres and featuring 22 different Greek and foreign grape varieties for white and red wine production.
