The 50 Great Greek Wines were announced | 2023

The announcement of the 50 Great Greek Wines | 2023 took place on Friday, October 20th, at the Conference Center of the Grand Resort Lagonissi Hotel. More than 300 guests eagerly awaited the long-anticipated list of winners at the 50 Great Greek Wines Awards Ceremony.

Myronas Stratis led the event, and GNTO (Greek National Tourism Organization) Secretary General Dimitris Frangakis graced the occasion with his presence. This year, 50 GGW celebrated Greek wine, awarding the producers following the conclusion of the third edition, held in the historic canaves of St. Joseph at Selene Restaurant in Santorini earlier this month. It’s worth noting that awards were presented to the winners of the individual categories, with the 50 wines being announced in alphabetical order.

The dynamic list of 50 GGW’s winners represents the heart of the project. For the first time, the individual 15 categories for 2023-2024 will receive multiple enhancements, amplifying the message of Greek wine’s greatness.

There was a special distinction for the two wines that have been recognized at all three 50 GGW events to date. Specifically, the “50 Great Greek Wines | Hall of Fame” was awarded to Estate Argyros, Cuvée Evdemon, and Lyrarakis Winery, Dafni Psarades.

With a record-breaking 609 wines from 201 wineries this year, those wines  honored on the 50 Great Greek Wines list will proudly represent our country in international markets, positioning Greek wine at the forefront of the global wine scene.

50 GGW assembles a prestigious judging panel annually, and this year was no exception. Our esteemed judges included Julia Harding MW (Senior Editor and Writer at JancisRobinson.com), Mark Andrew MW (Co-founder of Noble Rot Magazine & Restaurants), Lenka Sedlackova MW (Senior Brand Manager at Bancroft), Wojciech Bońkowski MW (Wine Writer), Caro Maurer MW (Journalist and Wine Educator), Demetri Walters MW (Wine Consultant), and Christophe Heynen MW (Serial Entrepreneur in the Wine Industry).

After the awards, Yiannis Karakassis, Master of Wine and the founder of 50 Great Greek Wines, shared his thoughts:

“Congratulations to the over 200 wineries that participated with approximately 600 wines. The value of participating in such a process far exceeds the quantitative assessment of the quality or commercial success of a label. It is primarily linked to engagement in the discussion for the further development of Greek wine. Alongside Grigoris Michailos DIPWSET, I would like to thank our producers and sponsors, these outstanding companies from various industries that embrace our institution every year. We owe them a big thank you for their trust. We are especially grateful to our platinum sponsors, Grand Resort Lagonissi, which hosted the awards ceremony, Selene Restaurant, which hosted the competition part, Alpha Bank, AON Greece, and Mr. Vertigo.”
