It is crucial to acknowledge those who do more than just talk about environmental responsibility, they take action. One such leader is Panagiotis Dimitropoulos of Sant’Or Winery in Santameri, Achaia. The label Santameriana Skin Contact received the Sustainability Award in recognition of its biodynamic cultivation, use of renewable energy sources, and its choice of a lightweight bottle weighing under 420 grams.
Sant’Or Winery in Achaia exemplifies what it means to cultivate with respect for nature and its rhythms. From vineyard to bottle, nothing is left to chance, and every decision is grounded in the philosophy of sustainability and ecosystem regeneration.
Specifically, a substantial part of the winery’s energy requirements is supplied by solar panels, harnessing the sun not only to ripen grapes but also as a main source of electricity. To save water, fog collectors have been installed, transforming atmospheric moisture into usable water for the vineyard and easing pressure on local water supplies.
Soil care is equally meticulous. Instead of conventional fertilisers, the winery uses practices such as green manuring and cover crops to enhance the soil’s natural fertility. At the same time, natural hedgerows and terracing techniques known as “karavomata” protect against erosion and help retain water in the soil, especially in sloped areas.
Even the irrigation system avoids modern, energy-intensive methods, opting for a wiser, tradition-inspired approach. “Gouves”, a natural rainwater collection basins reminiscent of ancient techniques from Mount Sinai, have been adapted to meet today’s needs.
A noteworthy detail is that even the wine bottle itself is designed with sustainability in mind. Weighing just 401 grams, the lightweight packaging significantly reduces the carbon footprint without compromising quality or aesthetics.
