Interview with winemaker George Lyrarakis

What does Dafni bring to your wine series differently?
Dafni holds a special place in our hearts, as it represents a cherished piece of history rescued from extinction when it found a home in our family vineyard, Psarades, in 1992. Its unique botanical character sets it apart from other white varieties of Crete and distinguishes it within the broader landscape of Greek wines. Furthermore, Dafni’s exceptional ageing potential defies the norms of most white wines, adding to its allure and making it a truly remarkable expression of our terroir and heritage.
What is the number one goal for the winery for the next decade?
Overall sustainability: Our commitment to sustainability encompasses various facets, including environmental, social, and economic considerations. Through practices such as organic farming, biodiversity protection, and regenerative agriculture, we strive to minimise our environmental footprint and safeguard the ecosystems in which we operate. Socially, we prioritise supporting workers, producers, and the broader community, ensuring that our operations contribute positively to their well-being and livelihoods. Economically, we uphold fairness by offering fair prices for our products to producers and consumers, fostering a sustainable and equitable business model that benefits all stakeholders.
What else can we expect regarding Cretan varieties in the future?
Cretan white varieties have garnered recognition and have consistently produced exceptional wines. With systematic vineyard work over several years, coupled with meticulous practices in the winery, we anticipate equally impressive results in red wines. Furthermore, the potential for outstanding wines from blends of indigenous varieties that were previously unexplored holds promise for exciting developments in the future.
