Great Greek Wines Awards 2025 – Greek Wine at its finest!
With the support of the Greek National Tourism Organisation
With glamour, international flair, and vibrant energy, the Great Greek Wines 2025 awards ceremony took place on Thursday, May 22 at the historic Hotel Grande Bretagne in Athens, once again showcasing the dynamism and progress of Greek viticulture.
More than 300 distinguished guests attended this special evening, including wine professionals, producers, official representatives, and wine enthusiasts. The event was hosted by Myron Stratis and supported by the Greek National Tourism Organization (GNTO). This year’s edition brought forward 65 standout wines selected from 660 entries representing 200 wineries from Greece and Cyprus, clearly reflecting the institution’s growing momentum and recognition.

An institution with international ambitions
The creator of the initiative, Master of Wine Yiannis Karakasis, emphasized that Great Greek Wines is not just a celebration – it’s a tool. A tool for promoting Greek wine internationally with professionalism, transparency, and a clear strategy. As he stated, this effort aims to strengthen the image of Greek wine on the global stage.
Innovation and recognition
This year, for the first time, the awards included not only the main list of the 65 top wines but also introduced the 30 Great Value Wines — labels that stand out for both quality and affordability (priced up to €17). In addition, six new wines were inducted into the Hall of Fame, a special recognition awarded to wines that have consistently been honored for three consecutive times.
Renowned Mark Andrew MW, who joined online, highlighted the unique character of this year’s entries: wines with authenticity and personality, capable of excelling in international markets. As he pointed out, the value of the Great Greek Wines initiative lies not only in awarding excellence – but in bringing Greek wines to the world.
High-Profile Attendees
The ceremony was under the presence of Deputy Minister of Economy Mr. Papathanasis, representatives from GNTO and the Region of Attica, with the special attendance of Julia Harding MW.
Julia Harding MW, one of the most influential figures in the global wine scene, stated: “This year’s selection for Great Greek Wines once again proves the ongoing ascent of Greek wines – from so many different regions, grape varieties, and styles – toward the pinnacle of quality. These wines continually showcase the characteristics that make them unique, thanks to Greece’s vineyards and its dedicated winemakers. Tasting them was both a pleasure and a celebration.”
A list with meaning and environmental awareness
The list of award-winning wines has already been published. Next to each wine label, the bottle weight is also listed – an initiative aimed at raising awareness among winemakers and consumers about the environmental footprint of heavy bottles and the need for more sustainable choices.
The Great Greek Wines 2025 event was more than just an evening. It was a clear statement: Greek wine doesn’t just have a past – it has a present and, most importantly, a future. Thanks to people who believe in it, evolve it, and passionately represent it both in Greece and abroad.
