GGW | More in Germany: Great Greek Wines Find Their Audience

The German wine market is among the most mature and demanding in Europe. At the same time, it represents one of the most important destinations for Greek wines aiming to position themselves at a higher qualitative and gastronomic level. Within this context, Great Greek Wines organized a series of targeted activities in Germany from 27 February to 2 March, bringing some of the finest Greek wines into direct contact with professionals, opinion leaders, and discerning consumers.

The events took place in Hamburg and on the island of Sylt, one of the country’s most renowned gastronomic destinations. The program included four different initiatives designed to engage both the wine trade and a more specialized audience of wine enthusiasts.

The program opened with a dinner at Aquarium in Sylt, where approximately 30 consumers had the opportunity to taste Greek wines in a gastronomic setting that highlighted their potential at the table. The audience response was particularly positive, confirming the growing interest in high-quality Greek wines.

This was followed by a more intimate and exceptionally high-level dinner at the two-Michelin-star restaurant of the Söl’ring Hof hotel in Sylt. The experience left a strong impression on participants. As Caro Maurer MW, Master of Wine and judge at the Great Greek Wines competition in 2020 and 2023, commented: “A truly outstanding experience overall. Top Greek wines were presented in a different context, alongside high gastronomy and in front of a highly knowledgeable and receptive audience. These activities generated genuine interest and discussion around Greek wine and highlighted how exciting and dynamic Greece is today on the international wine map. Overall, it was a fantastic experience.”

An equally important component of the program were the masterclasses organized for wine professionals. In Sylt, a masterclass was held with the participation of 12 professionals from local restaurants, while in Hamburg a second masterclass gathered 25 industry professionals.

These presentations offered participants a deeper and more meaningful introduction to the wines distinguished at the Great Greek Wines initiative, allowing market professionals to explore both the breadth and the quality of contemporary Greek winemaking.

Yiannis Karakasis MW, Master of Wine and founder of Great Greek Wines, emphasized the importance of this presence in such a competitive market: “The German market is particularly demanding and highly competitive. At the same time, it shows strong interest in high-quality Greek wines, confirming that the further positioning of Greek wines at a more premium level represents an important strategic direction.”
