🌿 Sustainability at Great Greek Wines
1. Sustainability as a Core Pillar of GGW
At Great Greek Wines, sustainability is more than a buzzword; it shapes our thinking, planning, and actions. From organising tastings to promoting our award-winning wines, we embed sustainability across every aspect. Our goal is to build a wine platform that prioritises environmental responsibility, supports the people behind the wines, and fosters a brighter future for the Greek wine industry.
2. Sustainability in the Tasting
Recycling & Materials
- We collect and recycle all wine bottles used in the competition.
- We collect corks and send them to specialised recycling facilities.
- No plastic tags – we use recycled paper, wood, or fabric.
- All GGW merchandise (bags, notebooks, pens) is made from organic or recycled materials.
Digital-First Processes
- All judging is done digitally – no printing, no waste.
Plastic-Free Approach
- We provide reusable water bottles and use only glassware.
Transportation & Accommodation
- Judges move around using electric vehicles or low-emission transport.
- The selected hotel must follow sustainable practices (recycling, energy efficiency, zero food waste, etc.).
3. Sustainability in Awarded Wines
Packaging & Footprint
- We encourage lightweight bottles (under 420 g for still wines and 600 g for sparkling) to reduce CO2 emissions during transport.
- We encourage the use of recycled glass and sustainable closures.
- GGW will list the bottle weight alongside each awarded wine.
Winemaking Practices
We encourage wineries to:
- Adopt renewable energy (solar, geothermal, etc.)
- Use organic or biodynamic practices in the vineyard
- Recycle and manage water use responsibly
GGW Sustainability Award
We’re introducing the Sustainability Award, recognising wines that adhere to strong sustainability principles, such as:
- Certified organic or biodynamic farming
- Use of renewable energy
- Lightweight bottles
Visibility & Communication
Through GGW’s platforms—such as social media, the website, and events—we showcase producers leading the way in sustainability. Consumers deserve to know the stories behind their beverages. Great Greek Wines strives to set a standard for a contemporary, responsible wine competition: one that is mindful, authentic, and driven by values. Our aim is to promote Greek wine not only for its quality but also for its meaningful purpose.
